Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos
Stunning landscapes and crystaline water.
We arrived to Thessaloniki International Airport “Macedonia” yesterday around 01.00 pm after a rather short and comfortable flight with Air Serbia via Belgrade. At the airport in Thessaloniki we picked up a rental car at the Sixt car rental office and off we went. Kassandra here we come!
It takes about one hour to drive from the airport to Kassandra, normally… We asked the woman at the car rental for the direction to Kassandra before leaving the airport and she told us to take the direction of N. Mouhonouaa something…? We asked her three times but with her rather strong Greek accent we didn’t really get it. Anyway, off we went!
We saw a sign with the name off N. Michanihna and said to each other that this must be it. Of course, as You can imagine this wasn’t “it” at all. After half an hour drive we looked at each other and said that this doesn’t feel right, it must be wrong! So, we drove all the way back to the airport and found another sign with the name of N. Moudania on it and this time it was the right one!
It’s raining! I must say that it’s hard not get disappointed as I really was longing for a warm and sunny holiday in Greece. In spite of the bad weather we still had an interesting day driving around the island sightseeing but to be honest I really do hope that the sun is back again tomorrow.
Church of Panagia Faneromeni – On our trip around the Kassandra peninsula we found this lovely old church, all in white and blue, just in front of the Aegean Sea. Outside the church, next to the small entrance, you’ll find the rather amazing history of the church that was built back in the 16th centuary by the villagers.
The best parts of the visit is inside the church, so don’t miss it! Have a look of the picture of Holy Mary and the hagiographies from the 16th centuary.
*Why not read the story about Church of Panagia Faneromeni before You get there.
Where do we stay?
A few weeks ago we made a hotel reservation in a 3-star hotel for 6 nights in the beautiful peninsula of Kassandra. Kassandra is one of three penisulas in the area of Chalkidiki (also called Halkidiki). As usual we made a choise of a centrally located beach front hotel as we think that the hotel location is absolutely one of the most important things for a successful vacation.
The hotel is really situated just in front of the sea (Gulf of Toroneos) and within a 3min. walk from the hotel You’ll find the charming village of Hanioti with its restaurants, cocktail bars and shops.
