Rum, coconuts and ramshackle houses

Quality never goes out of style

Something new and something old, would assume that it’s the same owner to both cars above. This is part two of our visit to Guadeloupe and I must mention that it´s not only rum, coconuts and beaches over there, is it a lost paradise. Anyway, I really appreciate their laidback and colourful lifestyle.

Many of the houses are very vivid and multi-coloured but you will also find a lot worn out houses in really bad conditions. It is with mixed feelings you walk around and see palm trees on the streets beside overfilled dumpsters.

House for rent

Here is another example of a shabby and a worn out house. It is situated on the main street and have a magnificent sea view of the Indian Ocean. This plot should probably cost a fortune anywhere else.

Walking not more then 20 meters and you’ll find these houses on the opposite side of the street. Newly renovated but without the sea view, the view was actually the house above.

Cinnamon lady

They where setting up their table early every morning to sell whatever they had. This colourful lady where selling cinnamon and spices. We tried to visit the market every morning just because it was fun to be a part of their day-to-day life.

Braided hats

Braided hats

This guy was making braided hats and bowls out of palm leaves. He didn’t like to be photo’d at all. He went over to us and started to argue in some Guadeloupe/French language and didn’t give up until we gave him a few cents.

Rum rum and some more rum

Rum rum and some more rum

If you didn’t get this in part one, they make rum in Guadeloupe, yeah a lot of rum and many of the ladies on the market make their own blend or punch as they call them.

Hats of for the lady’s

The sun is rather strong so they really recommend a locally made straw hat, which is much better then a baseball cap they said. They are at least much nicer and good looking.

Under the parasol

It doesn’t seem to be any problem to set up your own table outside the local shopping mall and sell your own goods. Here you would find garlic, onion and once again spices. Im pretty sure she had some rum under the table as well.

Our own beach

Our own beach

I cant just put up a lot of photos and not showing you the stunning beaches of Marie Galant. We drove by car to the north west side and cold see the ocean between the trees and decided to stop the car and found this empty beach. Not a human or shark as far as the eye could see.
